Department of Religion

WelcomeWelcome to the Department of Religion at Rutgers University — New Brunswick. We are a pluralistic department with faculty members who conduct research and offer courses in major religious traditions in the world. The study of religion is intrinsically interdisciplinary where multiple disciplines converge, such as anthropology, art, history, literature, philosophy, science, and sociology, etc. Religious studies coordinates these fields for a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the complex phenomenon that is religion, representing some of the most intricate constructs and expressions of the human spirit, from multiple perspectives. The Religion Department fosters an environment for scholarly analysis and comparison of a wide variety of religious systems and phenomena, both within and across cultural and historical boundaries.
