Admission Requirements:

Applicants to the Master's Degree program in Religious Studies should normally have a GPA of at least 3.0. An undergraduate degree in Religious Studies is not required. 

Application materials should include:

  • A completed online application form
  • Official transcripts from previous colleges and universities the applicant has attended
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A personal statement (1–2 pages in length). Please ensure that the statement addresses the applicant's intended area of focus in Religious Studies.
  • The application fee
  • International Students for whom English is a foreign language will need TOEFL or IELTS scores demonstrating English proficiency.

Please note that the Department of Religion does not review or process application fee waivers for eligible students. The Office of Graduate Admissions grants application fee waivers to the following groups only: active U.S. military and military veterans who plan to apply for educational benefits under the GI Bill, current Rutgers students and alumni, and participants in various scholar programs. Students are automatically reviewed for fee waiver eligibility based on the information they provide on their application to Rutgers Graduate School. Applicants may address questions regarding a fee waiver to the Office of Graduate and Professional Admissions (New Brunswick).
